“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” – Proverbs 19:21
We live in a world that tells us to plan, strategize, and chase our dreams. And there’s nothing wrong with planning—Scripture even encourages diligence and stewardship. But when our plans begin to clash with what God is doing in our lives, we often feel it deep inside: a tug-of-war between the head and the heart.
Maybe you’ve been there. You know what you want to do, but you sense God leading you in another direction. You’re caught in that battle of the mind and heart.
Could it be that the very tension you feel is a sign of God’s call?
When our thoughts and desires start pulling in different directions, it can feel confusing. But sometimes, this inner battle isn’t a sign of confusion at all—it’s a sign of conviction.
God may be stirring something new in you, asking you to step away from your own plans so that His greater purpose can unfold. The battle within us may be a sign of God’s calling.
The question isn’t whether we’ll feel this tension. We will. The question is whether we’ll let His purpose prevail.
In our modern world, we often talk about the head and the heart as two separate things: the head is logical, the heart is emotional. But biblically, this distinction doesn’t really exist. In Hebrew, the same word—lev—is used to describe both the mind and the heart.
This means that, in God’s design, our thinking and our feeling are not at war with one another. They are intertwined. God doesn’t just want your intellect or just your emotions.
He wants the whole of you.
Here’s something important to remember: the enemy knows he can’t get to your heart. The heart belongs to God when you’re in Christ. That’s why Proverbs 4:23 tells us to guard our hearts, for everything we do flows from it.
But the devil can whisper into the realm of our thoughts. He plants lies, doubts, and distractions in the mind. Because, he knows if he can cloud your thinking, he can try to sway your choices. That’s why Paul urges us in Romans 12:2 to be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
So when you feel that inner tug-of-war, recognize what’s happening. The enemy may be trying to confuse your head, but God is speaking to your heart. And when you quiet the noise and listen to His voice, His truth always outweighs the lies.
God’s Purpose Will Always Stand.
We may make plans, set goals, and map out our futures, but God’s purpose is unshakable. Our lives are safest and most fruitful when aligned with Him. Even when we resist, He has a way of redirecting our steps to fulfill what He intends.
So, if you find yourself wrestling between what your mind is telling you and what your heart longs for, take courage. It may not be a sign of weakness. It may be a sign of calling.
Let your plans be surrendered to His purpose. Because in the end, it is not our striving that will prevail—it is the Lord’s perfect, eternal will.
Here is a short prayer of surrender:
Heavenly Father,
I thank You that Your purpose always prevails. When my mind feels clouded and my heart feels torn, help me to hear Your voice above every other. Silence the lies of the enemy and strengthen me to follow Your will.
Teach me to surrender my plans and trust that what You have prepared is far greater than anything I could imagine. Keep my heart anchored in You, and renew my mind daily with Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
